The Coming-of-Age Movie

Two overzealous aunts dote over and warn their niece about prom as she does her best Molly Ringwald impression before heading out the door. This kind of worked as a generation gap film too with the family members spending a lot of their diatribe giving advice based on their personal histories. The opening use of split screen was well done as you could see our high school girl being stared at and talked at by said aunties, but following that it did feel a bit like the split screen was not driving the film like it could have. I like that she did not let their overbearing presence get to her, although the finale of the film felt a bit rushed and struggled to produce the coming of age moment that I was really hoping for, as dark spiral for character development isn't usually what this genre is about.
