It's been said many times before...WHY HAVE THESE GUYS NOT BEEN GIVEN FUNDING TO DO A FEATURE YET??!!!
Another brilliant film from one of the most consistent teams in 48 hours. A real tough act to follow!
As always - the performances in this film were immaculate. But the cutting back and forth through time had me confused - and everyone was dressed so similarly that I lost track of who was who. The aspect ratio gave the impression if cinema, but there was so much soft-camera work and so little sense of the geography of each space, that the overall affect of the film was just a confused display of genuine acting talent.
Funny what Alan said - the first thing that went through my head is "when the hell are they going to make a feature?"
It's not my favorite Goodfellas film - I found it a bit overly jumbled chronologywise on the first viewing and spent a disproportionate amount of time figuring out what was going on - but it comes together powerfully and clearly at the end. And always love what Damon does with the camera.
A disjointed timeline gradually reveals the journey of a convict's redemption, as he is released from prison.
This is harrowing stuff from veterans Goodfellas. Even amongst such a quality heat, the film really stood out. The high drama coupled with incredible performances (that close-up...) and expert editing held my attention all the way. What I really enjoyed was discovering the story piece by piece. It may start off confusing, but it becomes very clear by the end.
My only minus is the music choice. Although it might seem to help glue the scenes together, it was the only thing that took me out of the film with its constant ring. This could have been a stronger film without music.
Well done and good luck for the finals!
I was so impressed with this film, strong storyline, strong acting, surprise ending, top stuff!
What a way to start the night. This film was flawlessly acted with an excellent twist and the best use of the required prop I think we're likely to see this year. Again, they absolutely nailed it. Best film in the heat, and likely to be a real contender in the finals.
I always enjoy Goodfellas output every year and this one is no exception. The story was a bit confusing at first. The jumps from one time to another are not very clear and for the first half of the film I was unsure what was going on. However, once things became clear, I was blown away. I heard a distinct gasp from the audience at the end which was well earned. Everything about this film was strong from the writing and the acting to the camera work and editing. I continue to be amazed by this team.
Everything about this film was top notch - cinematography, sound, music, and especially story and acting. As has already been mentioned it takes a while to fully understand what's going on, but at no time can you look away, and that ending packed such a strong punch that the audience were floored. Best use of prop without a doubt, and it would be a serious crime if they don't make the finals.
Every year without fail, this team sets the standard. Best looking film, great performances, excellent twist. It was a bit jumpy in the first half, and yeah scenes from the past could have done with a more distinguishable look maybe in the wardrobe. I think the vengeance guy needed to be developed a a little bit more, I wasn't rooting for him as much as he deserved. Kinda wished it was more violent. But anyway loved the shit out of it you guys are great.
Probably the best 48 I've ever seen. Everything about it was great, every actor, the story, the lighting, the sound, the music, the directing, the story. Pretty much flawless I reckon. Heat 11 had a lot of really good films but this was in a different league.
A guy grieves the loss of his wife, those responsible gather after one of them that went to prison is released, but doesn't want anything to do with the old group anymore because he has reformed his ways. The guy takes his revenge on the perpetrators and deals the most viscous blow to the last guy in a nice twist.
As always this team delivers some great acting performances, dark story and beautiful imagery. Not a surprise it won audience fav and would expect it to be a shoe in for the Ak final if not the national final. Brilliant.
I expected great things from these guys, and they delivered beyond great, beyond my expectations! Actors definitely deserve a standing ovation, the direction of the film is pure genius. Good luck boys!!
The twist in the plot is still fresh in my mind. That's what is so good about the Goodfellas films, especially this one, is the effect it leaves the spectator in! Well done to the team on another memorable film.
Simply a perfect example of a great storytelling. Well done!!!!
It seems lots of people were confused by the timeline issues. I found that was part of the journey and didn't detract. I really loved this film and was truly horrified by the ending. I am always pleased to see non comedy films in the 48 and this one was really, really strong. I liked Dr Jekyl's film but I think this one should have won the Auckland finals..
This was my favorite film of the finals, and I can't get it through my head how they didn't win. This is a pitch perfect film in every way, and that's regardless of the fact it was done in only 48 hours. Add that factor into the mix and it was a no-brainer that it should have won. So on that note, I'm predicting that not only will it make the grand final, without the help of a PJ wild card this year, but it will take out the grand prize as well. This will go down as one of the all time best 48 hour films, and I hope like hell the commission picks up this film!
Totally loved your film guys. Was the best "oh my god, I did not see that coming!" moment from any of the films I've watched this year. I can't flaw it.
